Biography
Corporal Johnson originally hailed from Savannah, GA, but moved north when the idea of abolishing slavery began to percolate divisive tensions in the South. Not being rich enough to own slaves, he’d build a reputation for being congenial and kind to all people throughout his life, but there was a cunningness about him that made him a perfect spy.
He appears to Dakota in a Confederate uniform because he was killed in action. After he was planted in the Confederate army by the union higher-ups, a miscommunication among the brass let to an attack at the he was assigned, and he was killed in the subsequent shootout. Specifically, it was later found that he’d been decapitated by cannonfire and died with his cover intact. A journal he’d been keeping, coded to ensure privacy, was returned to his family in Savannah, who in turn turned it over to Union army. The contents allowed for strategic planning and a win at the Battle of Vicksburg.
While he does appear in a Confederate uniform, he fortunately gets to keep his head attached, as he never knew what hit him. The Paranet
