Description
Next door to the Police Commission, this is the home of the Fire Marshals and Investigators. It's also the home of SFFD Local 798, the "Union" that is really an association of many of the City's resident aqua- and pyro-mancers and a few full-fledged wizards.
An unassuming brick building with the SFFD shield over the door, this place stands as a contrast to the better funded, but much less supernaturally aware Police Department.
The San Francisco Fire Department was founded in 1850, as a group of often-bickering volunteer companies scattered around the City. In 1866, the Board of Supervisors purchased steam driven fire engines and began hiring staff. This marked them as the first paid fire company west of the Mississippi. They worked diligently to improve their capabilities and infrastructure.
But there were no wizards on the payroll. There weren't any wizards on the West Coast who thought themselves so low as to be a mere fireman.
Then the 1906 earthquake happened, and the City burned, and the beloved and admired mortal Chief Engineer Dennis T. Sullivan was killed in action. The toll these events took weighed heavily on their wizened wizardly hearts.
In 1912, a small group of wizards under the leadership of Patrick O'Sullivan sought out employment in the fire department. They grouped together as Local 798, and took over many of the fire prevention and investigation tasks. This grew into its present day structure, and they have been diligently working to protect their beloved City ever since. Wizard lifespan being what it is, many of the originals are still around, though now masquerading as their grandchildren or great grandchildren. This gives the SFFD Division of Fire Prevention and Investigation a reputation as being "a real family business *cough*nepotism*cough*", but that's not exactly warranted. It's not nepotism if it's the same guy for a hundred+ years, right?
This building also houses the Records department of SFFD - both the public records, and the real records to which only Union members have access.
